Cooperation between RAU and the tourism business environment

Thursday, January 17, 2013, there was a festive event at Romanian-American University, where the third year students from the School of Domestic and International Economy of Tourism, coordinated by assist. lect. Camelia Gheorghe, Ph.D., had presented their projects completed during the first semester. The novelty of the event was the fact that students, who have been worked in teams, not only during the seminars, but in addition to the educational schedule, achieved their first interdisciplinary attempt, project which were based on knowledge gained both from Ticketing and from International Tourism disciplines.
Another innovative emphasis was that their presentations haven’t been made through the "classic" program Power Point, but with a more dynamic and attractive web applications, Prezi, which they studied alone and used it successfully.

At the end of the course, there were offered diplomas and the best projects were awarded: ''Opportunities to diversify hotel offer in the Sydney International Airport area - the essential element of the tourism development in the region'' (First Place, Team Cangoo), ''Trends and strategies for tourism development in the Autonomous Community of Valencia and for services at the Valencia airport'' (Second Place, Team Wild Wild West), "New perspectives regarding the development of tourism and air transport on the island of Tenerife" (Third Place, Team COFF).
It were also given special awards, but guests that honoured the event with their presence appreciated the commitment and focus of all students, and also the uniqueness and difficulty of the papers. Among the teachers who attended the event were from the faculty management, from the department and also from other programs of study.

In this context, several companies in the private sector welcomed the initiative launched at the School of Domestic and International Economy of Tourism, considering that it is essential that students see the connection between the disciplines they study and that this applied activity is actually the bridge to the practical reality. Moreover, their representatives have expressed their interest in sponsoring the event and awarding the winners.

"The disciplines of the curriculum are pieces of a puzzle that contains the set of knowledge for any student, the future graduate. This interdisciplinary project put together all the pieces to form a whole. Thus, we can see the logical correlation of disciplines and their practical applicability. I was impressed by the achievements of students! And I have to underline the contribution of the person that was the soul of this initiative, Mrs. Camelia Gheorghe, Ph.D., a very good trained professor with many innovative ideas, who knows how to be both understood and respected by students, but first loved by them." - prof. Cezar Mihalcescu, Ph.D., Director of the Department of Tourism Services Management

"It was a real pleasure to be present at the "public" presentation of these projects - activities that focused not only on purely scientific aspects, but especially on developing skills and abilities necessary of any young graduate. I found, with delight, as each team member has assumed responsibilities within the project. Teamwork, analysis of identified advantages and disadvantages on a given / chosen research topic, the solutions found, and the way they did the presentation of projects are real benefits for those students who have chosen to participate in this activity." - assist. lect. Silvia Tabusca, Ph.D., School of Law

"It is interesting to note that students participating in this new concept of study at Romanian-American University were enthusiastically involved in researching and proposing new projects in tourism, motivated by their own desire, knowledge and competition with the other colleagues. Also, it could be observed that these presentations were based on a constant research, carried out throughout the semester in a step-by-step system, with important practical applications, which in conjunction with the private sector, can further inspire the students entrepreneurial desires. Among the participants, I noticed a few former beneficiaries of Erasmus scholarships, both of placement and study, who applied in this project certain study and presentation techniques, also found at other European universities and companies." - Flavius Streianu, Erasmus Assistant

"North Korea, a concentration camp as large as a country" - Photo Album Launch

In an era when tv stations broadcast everything but they do not communicate anything, Adelin Petrisor chose to realize an exciting photo album inside one of the most secluded contries in the world today - Norht Korea.

The Polirom Publishing House and the Romanian-American University invite you on Friday, 1st of March 2013, 18:00 hours, in the Senate Hall, to meet Adelin Petrisor with the occasion of the public launch of the "North Korea, a concentration camp as large as a country" photo album, signed by the journalist which will also have a lecture on the North Korea present situation.

Presenter: Prof. Young Sun Ha, Departament of Asian Studies of the RAU

Host: Prof. Ovidiu Folcut, Rector of the RAU

The photos inside the album have been awarded the "Editorial Non-Pro", International Photographywards prize and have also been nominated for the "Discovery Of The Year", Lucie Awards 2012.

With a preface signed by the journalistCatalin Tolontan, "North Korea, a concentration camp as large as a country" represents also a warning regarding the risk of repeating the mistakes of history, as the author Adelin Petrisor confesses in the beginning of the volume:

"THe contact with Kim's country was, as I expected, very harsh. I have seen familiar images: store queues, huge streets almost empty, pharaonic buildings. At every street corner, through speakers, you can hear mobilizing discourses and the huge banners present only the unique party propaganda slogans... The Orwell-like images gave me creeps and made me think that Romania would have looked the same if it was not for the December 1989 events".

"Japan-Romania - differences, similarities, confluences" Conference

Japan - a universe which is so close, and yet so far away. For a long time, Japan has meant for many Romanians either Shogun, Samurai, Madama Butterfly or Toshiro Mifune. In time, anime has given a whole new meaning to Japan, and more and more young people are interested in the study of Japanese language.

The Romanian-Japanese Studies Center of the Romanian-American University was established as a space of union of ones passion and interest towards Japan. The organization of the conference "Japan-Romania - differences, similarities, confluences", in collaboration with the Faculty of History of the University of Bucharest and the Institute of World Economy of the Romanian Academy is a reflection of the interest of the RJSC in supporting and developing the interest for the study of Japanese language, society and culture, as well as that of the Romanian-Japanese relations. By virtue of this, the conference wishes to inaugurate a meeting space for specialists in various research fields( Linguistics, Economy, Literature, History, International Relations, Anthropology etc.), having Japan as the common interest point. The purpose of this manifestation is to highlight the variety of interests regarding the Nippon sphere, the privileged themes as well as the approaches. At the same time, the conference aims to bring into discussion the extent to which the Japanese model and solutions to the economic and cultural defiance of the contemporary world can constitute and example or can offer an answer to the issues faced by the Romanian society. Last but not least, an important aspect that was taken into account when organizing the conference was related to the viability of the soft-power concept in relation to cultural products such as manga, anime, J-rock.

The conference aims to be the first in a long series of academic meetings that will favor the founding of a discussion and debate platform on the development on Japanese and Asian studies.

    Student Themed Trip

According to our tradition of organizing a students' theme tour every academic year, the School of the Economy of Domestic and International Tourism, in its quality of a promoter of such activities at the Romanian-American University, organized, between the 24th and the 26th of May 2013, a tour to Brasov, the accommodation being at Club Bran Villa.
During the three days while the tour lasted, cultural and animation and entertainment activities took place (Urlatoarea Cascade in Busteni, Rasnov Castle, Valea Cetatii Cave), the students preparing adequate portfolios according to the tour theme.

At Club Bran Villa, both students and teaching staff members participated in entertainment activities specific to a holiday club (bow shooting, flying fox, wall climbing and horse riding, team and individual games and contests), as a result of which students obtained a series of prizes, certificates and medals. The piano recital, the folk music and the live concert on Friday and Saturday completed the three-day cultural activity.
The participation in outdoor activities in Adventure Park in Brasov (a park that offers ten itineraries of progressive difficulty) aimed at daring students to test their physical limits and challenge their mental astuteness.
At the end of the programme, upon their return home, the delegation had debates on the present stage of development of animation and entertainment in the visited location in comparison with other tourist lodging units in Romania and abroad. The most solid argumentations were awarded prizes.
All these interactive experiences and group activities have consolidated the partnership between students and the teaching staff in a pleasant and constructive way, liveliness and high spirits dominating the whole atmosphere.

    Romanian-Japanese Studies Center's Summer School 2013

The Romanian-Japanese Studies Center organizes its' annual summer school from the 27th to the 31st of July, 2013, in Balchik, Bulgaria.

  • RJSC-2013 Summer School Program [RO]

  • "Hospitality International Summer School" – first summer school in Romania on the topic of hospitality

Period 15th to 21st July 2013 marked a unique experience for students from the faculties of tourism and hospitality of the Romanian-American University (Bucharest), Babes-Bolyai University (Cluj-Napoca) and Stefan cel Mare University (Suceava) through the organization of the first summer school in the hospitality industry in Romania (Hospitality International Summer School). A unique experience in the information presented, practical issues and innovations in the area, involving experts in the tourism industry.

Hospitality International Summer School meant so many things… Romania, tourism, hospitality, school, study visits to hotels, music, walks, hundreds of steps, sloping streets, sport, ETII written on the grass, feelings, dreams, experiences, people... Cultural tourism, adventure, business, ecotourism... All with the flavour of Cluj. And Sibiu. And Alba Iulia. And Salina Turda, Cheile Turzii, Baisoara resort. A week that can easily amount to several specialized books read or even more than a regular month of school. A week with unique moments that otherwise would not have existed. An incredible experience that we really hope to become a tradition.

We thank for the participation and involvement of all professionals in the hospitality industry, who managed to convey, in a relatively short period of time, highly relevant messages to everything tourism in the 21st century means.

  • Razvan Pirjol (CIT): "Tourism in Romania needs a new attitude, a new vision. Young specialists in the area can bring the change!"
  • Patricia Dodu (URA): "Perhaps globalization is not something so marvellous. Beyond the dreams, beyond the luxurious resorts, there are people who smile and make you feel wonderful maybe for only one dollar a day."
  • Adina Horodica (Xpect):
  • Perseverance and creativity are the essence of success in the hospitality industry."
  • Doina Grigoras (Tez Tour): "Nowadays, the tourism industry can be defined by a single word: dynamic. Nothing is the same, and things evolve at breakneck speed."
  • Adrian Vadan (Eximtur): "Success in the business area in tourism is based on the accuracy of contracts and resolving conflicts that may arise."
  • Calin Ile (Ibis): "We are the future. Tourism in Romania needs fresh forces, specialists able to offer a new perspective over the industry."
  • Ovidiu Cioci (City Plaza): "The industry of events organization is complex, and a successful planning means creativity."
  • Cris Micut (Trend Hospitality Consulting and Management): "In business, you have to be pragmatic. You must be able to understand how things evolve, to feel when to retire or, on the contrary, when you have to seize the chance. You must always be one step ahead of change."
  • Alexandru Olteanu (Caro Hotel): "Brands live in our minds so that they become more powerful, and we, ultimately, more weak in front of them. In the hospitality industry, the brand makes a difference."

  • All these wonderful things are due to the dedication and commitment of those who founded the Hospitality International Summer School, people without whom none of all that meant this summer school would have existed: Mrs. Daniela Firoiu, PhD Professor (RAU), Mrs. Smaranda Cosma, PhD Associate Professor (UBB), Mrs. Carmen Nastase, PhD Professor (USV). Thank you for a week full of extraordinary moments!

We thank the institutional management of the three universities for making possible that a simple, but wonderful idea be brought to life.

Along with the two universities, Ibis Hotel, Grand Hotel Continental, Novotel, Caro Hotel support as hosts, but also through the participation of industry professionals, a series of round tables, where past and future aspects of the hospitality industry in terms of the 21st century challenges will be discussed.

"Hospitality Days"... A journey started in a colourful autumn day. A journey through time, which will help students and Master students to (re)discover Bucharest's flavour. Old and new buildings... Old and new stories... Hundreds or thousands of steps... One history and stories hidden in every corner of Victoriei Avenue and beyond.
Time is running out the same... New dreams are born with every step for young and very young ones, for the mature ones, for those experienced... And in all this splendor of contemporary dreams and feelings, the city's hospitality and warmth seem to remain the same... Enough reasons to refresh Bucharest's interwar idyllic picture and that, for students involved in organizing the event, will be the beginning of the wonderful "Yesteryear Hospitality Story".
"The Yesteryear Versus The Contemporary Hospitality Story" will be discussed during the workshop on "Maison - confiserie; l'hotel - restaurant... La periode de l'entre-deux-guerres" (Thursday, October 31st, 2013, 10 o'clock, the Senate Hall of the Romanian-American University in Bucharest), where well known specialists in the hospitality industry will take part.
