I am saddened and shocked by this news.
I cannot imagine Romania without Dr. Smedescu.
The history of education in this great nation and the record of its successful transition cannot be written without an account of his work. In the face of overwhelming challenges, he created the RAU when other private universities failed by the score.
I remember going to the US Embassy during those early years to talk about support for the RAU. It was never an encouraging meeting. Yet, Dr. Smedescu succeeded in building Romania's most significant and innovative educational institution.
